PEGs are not exactly ingredients, but polymeric mixtures of various chemicals, which create a liquid and sticky compound. They are used as emollientsto soften and lubricate the skin and as surfactants to make lather the shampoos. In addition, they also act as emulsifiers, to keep the substances firmly united, but also – most importantly – as carriers. This means that they carry other active ingredients to reach the deeper layers of the skin, due to their ability to penetrate the skin barrier. The problem arises when the composition of PEGs is not pure, but also has other toxic or carcinogenic substances. In the event that these additional harmful substances are present, then those also penetrate layers of the skin and absorbed by the body. In addition, they can sensitize the skin, when it already shows some irritation or is injured. Both the FDA and the CIR (Cosmetic Ingredient Review) committee point out that they should not be used on injured or irritated skin.
