Bath time, admittedly, is one of the most harmless parts of our day. Unfortunately, however, almost none of us think that they might exist dangerous ingredients in shampoosbubble baths, creams, etc., which are harmful not only for hair us, but mostly for her health us.
The purpose of this particular article is to inform and not to scare people. Simply, the next time you buy a new shampoo, take a few minutes to read the ingredients on the back. If you spot any of the following, it would be best to avoid it.
Chemical ingredients in shampoos, which are harmful to health!
Polyethylene glycol (PEGs)
PEGs are not exactly ingredients, but polymeric mixtures of various chemicals, which create a liquid and sticky compound. They are used as emollientsto soften and lubricate the skin and as surfactants to make lather the shampoos. In addition, they also act as emulsifiers, to keep the substances firmly united, but also – most importantly – as carriers. This means that they carry other active ingredients to reach the deeper layers of the skin, due to their ability to penetrate the skin barrier. The problem arises when the composition of PEGs is not pure, but also has other toxic or carcinogenic substances. In the event that these additional harmful substances are present, then those also penetrate layers of the skin and absorbed by the body. In addition, they can sensitize the skin, when it already shows some irritation or is injured. Both the FDA and the CIR (Cosmetic Ingredient Review) committee point out that they should not be used on injured or irritated skin.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
In America we also call them sodium lauryl sulfate. They are the surfactants, i.e. the ones that create the foam in shampoos, shower gels, toothpastes, etc. According to the FDA and CIR in a study conducted in 1983 and re-evaluated in 2002, this substance is not so dangerous that it should be banned from entering skin contact us and does not cause cancer, as has been accused many times, until now. However, this particular ingredient can cause skin irritation. That’s why we don’t find it that often in baby and baby products. According to research, its action is so strong that in addition to removing dirt and grime, they also remove natural oils from our skin.
The synthetic fragrances it can be, many times, the reason that your scalp does not accept a hair product. Especially if you have sensitive skinsynthetic fragrance can irritate your skin. However, it is better to choose perfumes with herbal ingredients in shampoos such as, for example, essential oils and plant extract.
Their use has been banned by the European Union, due to their harmful effects on the human body. Very often, however, they are found in products, along with others dangerous ingredients in shampoosshower gels, creams, lotions, etc. Research has shown that they can cause testosterone disruption, as they have been blamed for reproductive and developmental problems. They have also been detected in high amounts in the urine of babies, in which bubble baths, shampoos, creams, etc. were used. In addition, they are often located within the synthetic product fragrances. It would be good, therefore, to check for phthalates and other artificial fragrances before buying a shampoo.
They are used as preservatives in care products. According to the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA)parabens are safe when present in small amounts, at a content of 0.01-0.03%. A study done in 2004 showed that there may be sub-classes of the substance in breast cancer. However, parabens have not been proven to have a direct link to cancer. However, they act roughly like estrogen and thus probably affect the cell growth process. At the same time, they may affect its smooth operation hormonal system.
Silicones in shampoos create, falsely, the feeling that our hair is healthy. On the contrary, with this ingredient, many layers are created, our hair is weighed down and thus, it appears greasiness and blur. Then our hair ends up lacking shine and softnessthat silicones provide at the beginning of their use. Their most common form, dimethicone, collects on the scalp and is difficult to remove, blocking moisture and essences, to penetrate the hair. They can also cause rashes, itching, irritation and burning, which then result in hair loss.
In any case, whether you have sensitive skin or not, it would be good to avoid the dangerous ingredients in shampoos, which we mentioned above, for precautionary reasons.
