How do I make avocado oil?

In case you don’t want to buy ready-made avocado oil, but prefer to make it yourself, it is produced in three main ways. It can be created from the flesh of the fruit or from its peel and is equally beneficial.

Although the most basic way to get avocado oil is the cold pressing method which preserves most of its beneficial components, vitamins and everything we need, this is difficult to achieve at home as it requires special presses. That’s why we present you some easy and simple ways to make your own avocado oil at home.

Avocado oil production method by drying the fruit

You will need:

  • 12 avocados
  • 1 flat pan
  • 1 clean gauze in a large size (prefer a sterile one from the pharmacy)
  • 1 dark container to store it

Method of preparation:

  1. Start by taking only the flesh of the fruit.
  2. Mash it until it becomes a cream and spread it on the baking sheet. This can be done with a fork or using your multi.
  3. Spread the avocado cream on the pan, creating a layer as thin as possible.
  4. Place the pan near the window for about 2 days so that the sun can see it and dry it out. Alternatively, put it in the oven at 60-70 °C until cooked (about 5 hours).
  5. After your pulp has turned a dark green-brown color, carefully put all the material into the cheesecloth and drain it into a clean container.
  6. Finally, transfer the liquid, which is the avocado oil you just made, into a clean sterile dark container and store it in a shady spot. Prefer something dark because it helps preserve the oil better.

Make avocado oil from the skin of the fruit

You will need:

  • 12 avocados
  • 1 fruit press – juicer
  • 1 hand strainer
  • 1 coffee filter
  • 1 dark storage container

Method of preparation:

  1. After washing and cleaning the avocados, keep their skins and put them one on top of the other in the fruit press.
  2. Place a container on the edge of the press to collect the oil that will come out of squeezing the skins.
  3. Start pressing the peels as many times as necessary until they stop releasing their oil.
  4. Replace the peels and try draining them again.
  5. Then take the container with the oil and pour the liquid into the coffee filter, which you will have placed first in the strainer and then over a clean container. This will filter the oil to remove any bits of skin that have fallen off.
  6. Finally, store the avocado oil in a dark container and put it in a shady place.
