The mop is one of the cleaning tools we use most at home. It is practical and convenient for washing floors. How can we make sure, though, that it is always clean and disinfected? Ignoring this step could result in the spread of bacteria and germs. The home remedies to take care of the mop are varied and below we propose some really effective ones.

How to clean the mop

Collecting dirt from our floors is as important as the hygiene of the instrument used. Cleaning the mop superficially is a mistake. Here, then, are some simple methods to sanitize it better, using commonly used products, which are almost certainly present in everyone’s homes.

Before we proceed with reading, here are a few useful tips to remember:

  • wear gloves to protect your hands and avoid spreading germs;
  • the most evident dirt residues can be removed manually, before starting any preferred procedure among the various ones indicated;
  • the mop should be washed after each use. Both frequency and timing are fundamental, avoiding in the first case the proliferation of germs and in the second that the dirt dries up and is more difficult to remove;
  • It is important to let everything dry in the open air. Preferable during the day, so that the sun can help disinfect the cleaning tools.

Clean the mop with vinegar and baking soda

The procedure is very simple. The first thing to do is fill a basin with warm water: a glass of vinegar is enough for every liter of water.

The basin must not be filled up to the edge: consider that the liquid level increases with the immersion of the mop. The latter must remain in soak for about 30 minutes. Then, “armed” with gloves, all you have to do is rub hard and remove all traces of evident dirt. After rinsing everything, the operation can be said to be completed. Alternatively, you can also decide to use the washing machine, adding, in this case, half a glass of vinegar together with the detergent in the special compartment, washing everything at 60 °.

Another element of great importance, in such cases, is bicarbonate. This can be used alone to clean and sanitize, or in combination with vinegar. Let’s analyze the first option.

In a bucket full of warm water we can pour half a glass of baking soda, leaving soak the mop for about two hours. Then all you need to do is rinse several times, until an acceptable result is obtained. Everything can also be washed quickly in the washing machine, adding a level spoonful of bicarbonate to the tray and letting it dissolve well in the detergent (important to do this, in order to avoid clogging the drains).

The second option, as mentioned, involves one combination of these two elements. In a bowl with vinegar in the right proportion, we can also add two tablespoons of baking soda. A mixture that allows not only to sanitize but, where necessary, to degrease the mop.

As well as vinegar, too lemon is effective both for cleaning and for removing unpleasant odors due to accumulated dirt. For this method we need a basin filled with hot water.

Inside, pour the juice of two lemons, mixing well. The mop must then be left to soak for about two hours. Later, during rinsing, pay attention to the removal of further residues, protecting hands with gloves. In case of persistent dirt that is difficult to remove, you can proceed with the same operation, this time using only clean water. All to soak for another two hours, then rinse.
