The factors that cause age spots

The main reason is high exposure to sunlight. The skin, in order to protect itself from harmful rays, increases melanin production unevenly. So it would be good not to neglect the use of sunscreen on the back of the hands even in Winter, as well as to avoid excessive exposure to the sun.

Another decisive one factor in the appearance of discolorations on the skin of the hands are the hormones. The increase in estrogen during pregnancy makes it more likely to develop brown spots from the sun. The same happens with drugs that affect hormones, such as contraceptives, but also in general with any products that cause photosensitivity in the skin.

Can freckles and brown spots disappear from the hands?

The complete disappearance of skin discolorations is not always possible. But what you can achieve is to soften them so that they become almost invisible. Especially if you catch them at the beginning of their creation.

The most important thing is to choose the appropriate treatment method. So first find the reason they were created and give a basis for their size.

Treatment with natural remedies for spots and spots on the hands

Take advantage of natural materials and their beneficial properties to help discolorations soften and become imperceptible.

Aloe Vera: It is a plant widely known for its regenerative and moisturizing properties on the skin. Applying its juice or gel to the freckles / brown spots on your hands on a daily basis will slowly lighten their color, making them disappear to a large extent.

You don’t need to rinse it off, but if it bothers you or is sticky, leave it on for at least 45 minutes, then rinse off with water.

Lemon: The properties of citric acid and vitamin C make it ideal for treating skin discolorations. Simply apply topically the lemon juice straight or diluted with water (if straight irritates your skin) on the spots you want to whiten and leave it on for 20 minutes. Then rinse it very well and don’t use soap.

But you should know that the lemon treatment creates photosensitivity in the skin, which will lead to opposite results if you go out in the sun, intensifying the problem with freckles and spots on the hands. So don’t forget to wash it off really well before you go out and apply your sunscreen. So prefer to do the mask at night.

Apple cider vinegar: It has the ability to exfoliate the skin, removing dead cells from its surface, due to the alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) it contains. All you have to do is apply it topically for 30 minutes, once a day and no more. Excessive use may dry out your skin.

After 6 weeks of continuous use, you will see visible results.

Alternatively, mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 1 tablespoon of hand moisturizer and massage the mixture in for 10-15 minutes. Then leave it on overnight.

Cosmetic or medicated whitening hand cream

In cosmetic stores and pharmacies you will find a variety of whitening creams that can lighten skin discolorations. Some are more effective while others take longer to work.

So if you choose this method, it would be good to first consult a dermatologist who will recommend the ideal product for your case.

The most characteristic ingredients that can restore the skin to its lost brightness are:

  • Hydroquinone
  • Tranexamic acid
  • Glycolic acid
  • Kojic acid
  • Liquorice extract
  • Nicotinamide
  • Vitamin C

For the bleaching cream with hydroquinone in particular, it is worth noting that it is only available after a medical prescription. Its use, however, is controversial and may have side effects. In terms of its effectiveness, hydroquinone may reduce the formation of melanin in the skin, “erasing” the problem, but stopping its use in combination with sun exposure may bring back the dark spots on the hands.

Beyond that, there are herbal creams that can lighten spots and blemishes from hands thanks to a blend of vitamins and moisturizing ingredients.

All of these, however, also require the systematic application of sun cream on the hands in order to have any effect.

Aesthetic methods to treat brown spots

In addition to the natural ways of dealing with spots and patches on the hands and cosmetic or medicinal creams, there are also the following aesthetic methods.

Chemical peeling: It regenerates the skin and renews it, removing its damaged surface layer and revealing a new, healthy skin. To do this, the doctor applies a chemical solution that exfoliates the skin, removing its dead cells. Along with them, the freckles and spots go away. Learn more about chemical peels.

Dermabrasion with diamond or microcrystals: It is a method of mechanical deep exfoliation that renews the skin, cleaning it in depth and softening imperfections such as freckles and spots on the hands. See more information about skin scraping.

Cryotherapy: This minimally invasive method freezes the discolored spots locally. To achieve this liquid nitrogen is used at temperatures of -175°C and -160°C which destroys the pathological tissues. After its application there may be a slight irritation on the skin, but this subsides and a new bright skin is revealed. In some cases more than one session may be needed for the desired result.

IPL and Laser: Both of these methods do exactly the same job. They destroy the cells that have created the melanin. But they differ in terms of their technology. IPL is based on pulsed light, while Laser is based on rapid thermal energy deposition. Of course, the application of the laser is not recommended for cases of deep melasma, because inflammations can be caused, which intensify the deposition of melanin in these places. In these cases, prefer deep exfoliation.
