Stress and anxiety may be the cause of insomnia but some bad habits can also have harmful consequences on sleep, such as smoking and drinking alcohol.
On TikTok, however, a British doctor named Karan Raj highlighted another bad habit to banish: doing stimulating activities when in bed. A mania that can be at the origin of what the expert calls “acquired” or “conditioned” awakening. Furthermore, Dr. Raj has revealed a simple and effective trick to fall asleep easier.
Getting out of bed: the trick to combat “conditioned awakening”
According to Dr. Karan Raj, if we fall asleep on the sofa but no longer feel tired when we go to bed, then the cause could be conditioned awakening.
The expert explains: “You accidentally trained your body to associate your bed with being awake because you do things in bed that energize you: watching Netflix, going on social media, working and even eating.”
The doctor, followed by almost 5 million people on TikTok, then gives a simple and effective advice to overcome this phenomenon: “get out of bed if you can’t fall asleep after 20 minutes”. The doctor also recommends moving to another room in the house until fatigue takes over. The target? “Breaking the association between bed and feeling restless”.
