Licorice in pregnancy, contraindications and everything you need to know

The licorice is the root of the plant of Glycyrrhiza glabra. Not only does it taste sweet, but it is packed with many mood-enhancing properties, so much so that it is considered a natural antidepressant.

Furthermore, the licorice root is an excellent natural remedy for several health conditions, including heartburn, asthma, fungal infections and viral infections. It may also offer therapeutic benefits for the treatment of ulcers, liver problems, tuberculosis, yeast infections, coughs, chronic fatigue, canker sores and arthritis.

But is it safe to eat licorice during pregnancy?

According to several studies, the pregnant women should avoid the consumption of licorice since it contains the glycyrrhizinwhich is a substance that can cause health problems such as headache, fatigue, high blood pressure, water retention, edema, and tachycardia, especially if used in excessive quantities.

Recent studies have also highlighted the relationship between the consumption of licorice during pregnancy and miscarriage and / or premature birth.

Experts from the Universities of Edinburgh and Helsinki stated that the consumption of licorice during pregnancy can endanger the placenta, while the glycyrrhizin seems to affect the brain and intellectual development of the fetus, through the impact on the mother’s stress hormones.

In a nutshell, we can say that, although the beneficial properties of licorice for health are so many, as this root improves mood and is also a natural antidepressant, in pregnancy contraindications of licorice are so many that we strongly advise against their use.
