The importance of protecting yourself

During the summer the sun gives us a beautiful golden complexion and the skin appears healthier and more beautiful, but unfortunately the tan it’s not all pink and flowers, on the contrary. The solar spectrum includes several types of rays that differ in energy and wavelength. Those able to reach the Earth are the UVA and UVB rays, responsible for thetan but also typical symptoms of getting too much sun, which include:

  • sunburn
  • burns
  • dark spots on the skin

The moment of onset and the severity of these symptoms depends on your skin type, the time spent in the sun and the time of year and day in which you are exposed. The first step is the reddening of the skin with an increase in skin temperature: the skin burns and burns and one is one step away from erythema, sunburn and burn. L’erythema it is characterized by the appearance of small bubbles filled with water, which cause discomfort, pain and itching. There sunburn instead it generates a more or less important burn in the areas of the body exposed to the sun and, in the following days, the skin will appear rough, dark and will tend to peel.

This happens because the free radicals produced precisely as a result of sun exposure are able to damage skin cells, increasing the risk of developing tumors.

According to experts, sunburn and burns that occur at a young age further increase this risk, so they are by no means to be underestimated. Unfortunately, it is the younger people who overlook the dangers of the sun: most of the girls and boys between 18 and 25 years it does not perceive the sun’s rays as a threat and does not apply any protection to defend itself. It is no coincidence that about 20% of new melanoma cases are diagnosed in the 15 to 39 age group.

Protecting yourself adequately from the action of the sun’s rays is therefore essential to prevent the side effects of the sun in the short and long term, protecting your health, especially when you are young.

How to protect yourself

The first way to protect yourself from sun damage is to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Lying in the sun for a long time to get a tan, perhaps without sunscreen, is an almost foolproof way to get burned. Much better to stay in the shade of trees, umbrellas or other structures: you get tanned even when you are in the shade and during cloudy days, albeit more slowly.

Who has the skin very clear and sensitive, it would do well to wear a hat with a wide brim and light and loose clothes, in natural fabrics, which do not sweat excessively and at the same time protect from direct sun.

It is also essential to apply one sunscreen, choosing the right protection for your skin type. The degree of protection offered by sun creams is indicated with a number ranging from 6 to 50+ and by the acronym SPF, acronym for Sunburn Protection Factor. In general, the protection factor o should be equal to 50+ for the first days of exposure, and then decrease to 30 in the following days.

Sunscreen does not prevent you from get a tan and does not interfere with the synthesis of vitamin D, but it serves to effectively prevent sunburn and erythema. Clearly, a single application of cream is not enough to be protected throughout the day: the application must be renewed at least every two hours and after taking a bath.

To prevent premature skin aging, skin dehydration and dark spots it is good to apply one cream with sunscreen even when you go out for a walk, using it on your face, arms, hands and other uncovered areas such as legs and feet. It is also important to avoid the use of some products before exposing yourself to the sun, such as perfumes and essential oils: many essences contain phototoxic molecules that accumulate the energy produced by the sun’s rays and then release it all at once. The result is very unpleasant and includes severe sunburn with blisters and blisters that leave unsightly scars and hyperpigmented spots. Among the essential oils richest in these substances we find those of bergamot, orange and citrus fruits in general, to be absolutely avoided before going to the beach or other sunny places.
